When it comes to replacing an entire arch of missing teeth, All-on-4 dental implants are one of the go-to solutions. Unlike traditional dentures, which rely on suction, adhesives, and muscle control to stay in place, implant dentures are directly anchored to your jawbone. This means that you’ll end up with a huge increase in biting power and a beautiful new smile that’s stable and strong. But you might have questions about what to expect, as well as what to eat, during your recovery period. Keep reading to learn more!
Recovering from All-on-4 Implant Surgery
All-on-4 implant surgery is complex by nature, so you can expect some side effects before the benefits of the surgery take full effect. You may experience minimal bleeding, swelling, and a stiff jaw and jaw muscles, as well as surgical site pain—but these effects are temporary and usually dissipate after about a week. You can also manage your discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers. It’s also important to begin brushing your new teeth the day after surgery using a soft bristle toothbrush—this is crucial for preventing infection.
Tips for Eating & Drinking After Your Implant Surgery
Although you’ll want to take it easy for those first few days after surgery, your dietary restrictions are going to last much longer; up to about 3 months post-surgery. Adhering to these guidelines is important to ensure a speedy and stress-free recovery:
- For the first 48 hours after surgery, try to drink only cool liquids. If you do drink something hot, do so only after the numbness from the anesthesia has subsided and any bleeding has stopped. Refrain from hot or spicy liquids until the third- or fourth-day post-surgery. Adhere to a liquid diet for one to two weeks and consider options like soups and broths, milkshakes, protein shakes and more.
- After two weeks, you can begin transitioning from your liquid diet to a soft food diet. Do not eat anything hard, chewy, or crunchy during this period, as it can interfere with your healing! Stick with options like baked or mashed fruits and vegetables, soft proteins, and dairy products, etc.
- Stay hydrated throughout your recovery; this is crucial, as it helps your mouth to maintain an optimal level of moistness for healing.
All-on-4 implants will absolutely change your smile and quality of life; but it’s dependent on your willingness to let them heal properly! Knowing what to expecting post-surgery and adhering to the correct dietary guidelines will ensure that your implants are able to last for many years to come.
